Beethoven-EN

Living and working in a green setting

Background

The Beethoven zone forms the transition between Zuidas and Beatrixpark, which dates from 1938 and is notable for its wide open spaces and lush greenery. It has formed the main inspiration for the urban planning concept of the entire Beethoven development. Wherever possible, buildings will offer a view of the park. In a few instances, existing greenery will have to give way to new construction, but it will be fully compensated. For every square metre of grass or shrubs removed, at least one square metre will be planted elsewhere in the district.

Beethoven will boast two other notable cultural amenities. First De Kunstkapel where the Zuidas Virtual Museum regularly organizes exhibitions and temporary art projects. Second, the first floor of the new AkzoNobel Building will house the Akzo Art Foundation whose collection will be on show to the public. The building itself will be among the most sustainable and eco-friendly in the Netherlands, with extensive use of solar energy and an innovative ventilation system.

The Sint Nicolaas Lyceum is also included in the planning area. This senior school prepares students for university and attaches particular importance to science, culture and sport. The new Sint Nicolaas Lyceum building will be on Beethovenstraat, close to Beatrixpark and nestling between Amsterdam city centre and the bustling Zuidas itself, with its many cultural and commercial activities. On the perimeter of Beatrixpark will be approximately 120 new residential units in various sizes and price categories. They will be designed to be in keeping with the tranquil residential climate of Beethovenstraat, while also taking advantage of the new international urban centre that is Zuidas Amsterdam.
