Background
Fred. Roeskestraat will become a rather more tranquil transition zone between Zuidas and other parts of the city. VU University and its acclaimed teaching hospital are within a few minutes' walk, as is the Olympic Stadium.
Roeskestraat will soon become a residential district with a strong cultural component supported by galleries, exhibition rooms, studios and café’s. There will be ample recreational facilities for children.
The 174 new homes on Roeskestraat will be developed on the side closest to the water and will have an average floorspace of 100 m². The other side of the street will have 20,000 m² of new office space. All new homes and offices will be connected to the district heating and climate control system, and will have an underground heat storage and exchange system.
The main east-west cycle route through Amsterdam will continue to pass along Roeskestraat. The section that now runs along Strawinskylaan may be rerouted via Prinses Irenestraat. Various measures will be taken to maximize safety. The tree-lined side streets between Roeskestraat and Zuideramstelkanaal will ensure that the entire area is fully accessible.
