Background

Kop Zuidas (the ‘head’ of the district) is an area which offers many exciting opportunities. It enjoys excellent public transport connections, ensuring ready access to and from all parts of Amsterdam and beyond. Close to the main entrance of the RAI conference centre will be Europaplein station, served by the new Noord-Zuid metro line (now under construction).

The area will have homes in various price categories, as well as offices and public amenities. Most of the new buildings in Kop Zuidas will have planted roof terraces to regulate rainwater drainage. The Zuid Borough Offices Building, the first project to be completed in the district (in early 2009) has just such a 'green roof'. 

Work has already begun on the new Amsterdam Regional Training Centre (ROC) on Europaboulevard. When complete, it will welcome some four thousand students. The ROC is a form of ‘community college’ which provides a combination of vocational training and work experience. Contact between students and the local community is a key feature of the concept, serving to integrate theory and practice. The building will therefore also house various companies which will take an active part in the training programmes.

Europaboulevard itself will be redesigned in the style of the Champs Élysées in Paris, with trees and grass on both sides, small public squares and other attractive open spaces.

A new synagogue for the Liberal Jewish Community is under construction and will be completed in mid-2010. At a later date, impresario Joop van den Ende is to open a new theatre specializing in stage musicals. A further hotel is planned nearby, enabling theatre-goers from all parts of the country to enjoy the varied programme without having to rush for the last train home. Around the theatre will be various cafés, restaurants and shops. It is hoped that the prestigious Lucia Marthas Dance Academy will also relocate here.
